What to Expect from a Student Residence

Where you live while you study is an integral part of your experience. It’s where you’ll relax after exciting days of learning and sightseeing, make your meals and make new friends. If you want to enjoy a more independent lifestyle and the social aspects of living with other students, a residence will suit your needs perfectly.

Types of student residences

Our student residences include a range of apartments, hostels, hotel rooms and student dorms that all provide a fantastic living experience. You can request either a single, double or twin room before you arrive, depending on your preference.

The distance of your student residence from your school will depend on your accommodation choices and budget – some residences could be just a 5-minute walk away, while others could be up to a 60-minute journey or more on public transport. We have a range of options that can help you balance cost with commute time to the school and city center.

In some destinations, we have a small number of student residences close to the school at a higher cost. If it’s important to you to be very close to the school, make sure you book your accommodation as far in advance as possible. 

Facilities at your student residence 

Most student residences are self-catering and will have a kitchen and cooking utensils for you to prepare your meals. Your room will have all the essential items you need for studying and storage, including a lamp, desk, chair and wardrobe. Residence buildings usually provide WiFi, laundry facilities, cleaning services and bed linen, but it’s important to check before you book. 

Other facilities may include:

• Cafeteria or vending machine
• Lounge or common area
• TV and/or games room
• Gym
• Bike storage
• Study area
• Outside space like a courtyard or terrace

If you have any problems or questions about your accommodating during your stay, we have a 24/7 phone number that you can call, day or night. One of the senior school staff will be able to help you with whatever you need.   

What to bring to your student residence

Facilities and services offered at student residences vary, so check what your residence provides before you pack your suitcase. Bed linen is usually provided (not always), but you might need to bring towels. Make sure you bring any prescription medication you need and any personal items to make your room feel more like home. Other things to remember are:

• your passport and visa documents
• your mobile phone and charger
• enough cash for your stay – including coins for operating laundry machines
• travel adapter
• comfortable shoes for walking around your new city
• your laptop and study equipment like notebooks and pens
• a journal for writing about your Kaplan experience
