カリフォルニアっ思うと、太陽の輝き、椰子の木そして暖かな天気って生徒達は思うよね。これはロサンゼルス、サンディエゴ、サンタバーバラ、オークランド、バークレイ、サクラメント、そしてサンノゼには正しい表現なんだけど、サンフランシスコは間逆なんだ。多くの生徒はたくさんのショートパンツとＴ－シャツのみをスーツケースに詰め込んで到着してから、サンフランシスコが寒くて霧がかっていることに気付くんだ。実は僕も2008年の7月に初めてサンフランシスコに来た時に同じ過ちをしたんだ。服を買いに行くまでは凍えていたよ！
サンフランシスコの伝統的な服装は男性も女性も温かくてスタイリッシュな“パーカー”なんだ。これは背中にフードの付いたセーターで、世界中のどこにでも見かけるかも知れないけど、僕の街では特に一般的なんだ。Facebookがまだ初期の頃CEOのマーク ザッカーバーグはよくパーカーを着た写真を撮られていて、それ以来パーカーはサンフランシスコでテクノロジー産業のシンボルになったんだ。世界の多くの所ではこの様な服装はカジュアルだと考えられる一方、サンフランシスコの堅苦しくないオフィス文化には完璧なんだ。ビジネススーツを忘れ、殆どの人々はパーカーを来て仕事をしているよ。
もしサンフランシスコでアメリカ人とすぐに会話を始めたいなら、サンフランシスコ ジャイアンツの帽子、シャツ、または（全部がベスト）パーカーを着るといいよ。今現在、サンフランシスコ ジャイアンツはアメリカンベースボールでは弱小チームのひとつだけど、サンフランシスコ人はこのチームをすごく誇りに思っているんだ。もし、ジャイアンツがどれほど好きかを伝えるとすごくたくさんのアメリカ人の友達が作れるはずだよ。でもこの戦略はロサンゼルスでは上手く行かないと思うけど。そして、サンフランシスコでロサンゼルスドジャースの服は絶対着るべきではないよ。もし着たら友達より敵を作ってしまうかも知れない…。
When students think of California, they often think of sunshine, palm trees, and warm weather. This is an accurate description of Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Oakland, Berkeley, Sacramento, and San Jose, but it is the complete opposite of San Francisco. Many students arrive at our school with a suitcase full of shorts and t-shirts only to find that the city is cold and foggy. I made the same mistake the first time I came to San Francisco in July of 2008. Until I went shopping for clothes, I was freezing!
The classic piece of clothing in San Francisco for both men and women is a warm, stylish “hoodie.” This is a sweater with a hood in the back. While you might see these everywhere in the world, they are especially common in our city. In the early days of Facebook, CEO Mark Zuckerberg was often photographed wearing a hoodie. Since then, hoodie’s have become a symbol of the technology industry in San Francisco. While such clothing might be considered casual in many parts of the world, they are perfect for San Francisco’s informal office culture. Forget business suits - most people wear hoodies to work!
If you want to have an instant conversation-starter with American people in San Francisco, wear a San Francisco Giants hat, shirt, or (best of all) hoodie. At present, the San Francisco Giants are one of the worst teams in American baseball, but San Franciscans are extremely proud of this team. You can make so many American friends if you talk about how much you love the Giants. This strategy will not work in Los Angeles, though, and you should never wear Los Angeles Dodgers clothing in San Francisco. If you do this, you might make more enemies than friends…
